Follow @NigeriaPI The family of businessman, Mr Goodie Ibru, has reacted to the announcement by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), declaring him wanted over alleged “capital market fraud, money laundering and diversion of funds”. In a statement on Thursday, the family described the EFCC’s action as scandalous, misleading and unfortunate and created the impression that Mr Ibru was on the run. They added that the businessman had earlier responded to the agency’s invitation for an interview on July 25. The family explained further that he was in the United Kingdom for medical treatment, but promised to honour the invitation on his return in the first week of November. They described the announcement by the EFCC as an indication of bias into an investigation of an issue that borders primarily on family misunderstanding, which they said the anti-graft agency was fully aware of. A publication on the anti-graft agency’s website had said Mr Ibru was declared wanted in connection with various crimes. The EFCC said Ibru allegedly “diverted billions of Naira and assets of Ikeja Hotels Plc, owners of Sheraton Hotel, Lagos, Federal Palace Hotel and Capital Hotel and owners of Sheraton Hotel, Abuja to his personal benefits”. source: channels...

Follow @NigeriaPI The Complaint Response Unit of the Nigeria Police Force has resolved 324 cases out of a total of 405 complaints made against the police by members of the public between July 1 and September 30, 2016. Fifty-one cases reported during the period were found to be false while 30 cases are pending, a report released on Thursday in Abuja by the Officer in charge of the CRU, Acting ACP Abayomi Shogunle, stated. The CRU said it recovered N2.75m bribe from an Assistant Commissioner of Police, serving in one of the state commands in the South-East, after a complaint was made to the unit through a telephone call. The police stated that the money was recovered from the ACP after the case was referred to the X-Squad for necessary action in line with the directive by the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, that the X-Squad be integrated into the CRU responding agents. Findings indicated that the errant senior officer had been referred to the Police Service Commission for disciplinary action. The report stated, “Record shows that the sum of N2.750m bribe was recovered from an Assistant Commissioner of Police, serving in one of the state commands after a complaint was made to the CRU through a telephone call. “Necessary disciplinary procedures are ongoing against the officer involved in the unacceptable conduct just as the suspect arrested in respect of the case, upon which the bribe money was collected, has since been handed over to the relevant government agency for prosecution for the offence.” The CRU report stated that Rivers State Police Command topped the state ranking with a...

Follow @NigeriaPI One of the parents of four freed pupils of the Lagos Junior Model College, Igbonla, Epe, Lagos State, has said the victims were brought back by the kidnappers to a bush behind the school, not far from where they were abducted six days ago. The parent, who pleaded that his identity be protected, told PUNCH Metro on Wednesday that the kidnappers brought the schoolboys, the teacher and the Vice-Principal to the area that they had passed through to invade the school on Thursday, October 6. Our correspondents learnt that some people in the school, who sighted the victims around 10.30pm, thereafter put calls across to their relations to announce their release. The kidnappers had last Friday, at about 8am, stormed the school premises while the junior school was rounding off the morning prayers and shot sporadically into the air. During the invasion, four pupils – Okonkwo Emmanuel, Isaac Adebisi, Abu and Jeremiah – were abducted while the English Language/Civic Education teacher, Lukman Oyerinde, and the Vice Principal, A.O. Oyesola, were also taken away by force. Our correspondents had reported the various stages of negotiation of ransoms between the attackers and the victims’ families, which was finally put at N1m ransom for each victim. PUNCH Metro gathered that the victims were hidden in a creek in the Epe area, which was said to be about four hours’ sailing from the school. It was gathered that the schoolboys, the teacher, and the VP were dropped off on Tuesday evening. Follow @NigeriaPI Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has said that only one of the 21 released Chibok girls has a baby. On Thursday evening, Osinbajo led some top government officials to visit the girls at the DSS Medical Centre, Airport Road, Abuja, where they are currently receiving medical attention. Osinbajo, who was accompanied by the Director-General of the DSS, Mr. Lawal Daura; Minister of Information and Culture, Mr. Lai Mohammed; Minister of Women Affairs, Senator Aisha Alhassan; Minister of State, Budget and National Planning, Zaynab Ahmed; and the Special Adviser to the President on Social Protection Plan, Mrs. Maryam Uwais, later briefed State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The Vice-President disclosed to journalists that the Federal Government did not swap any Boko Haram detainee for the release of the girls. “There was no exchange of any kind. There was no swap of any kind. Even when we started negotiations, we said we would consider all options available to us. Absolutely, there was no exchange of any kind,” he said. When asked if the government would consider a swap for the release of the remaining girls still in captivity, Osinbajo said the government would look at all options and weigh them carefully. “In doing so, however, the security and safety of the country would be considered,” he said. He said the government would rather use the same template that was used for the release of the 21 girls to secure the release of the remaining ones. Osinbajo said, “We must be sensitive to the fact that the government wants these girls back and alive. Again, we must balance this against the security and safety...

Follow @NigeriaPI Getting a partner these days has become easier and faster. You don’t need to attend your friend’s birthday bash with the intention of seeing the prettiest girl or the most handsome man in the group. One of the ways people get hooked up is through social media. One could be scrolling down that Facebook page or Instagram admiring pretty and hunk faces and get a hook. This is exactly what one man identified as Dee did. The man found a pretty girl on Instagram, hit on her and within no days they were out on a date. They fell in love and six months down the line they became husband and wife. The man was respectful enough not to hurry the new acquisition into laying her. He waited, just like the Holy books advise, for the right time to get down on her. But things turned ugly when the two got to bed to have intimacy. The lady hit the bathroom, had a shower and on returning, our good brother realised she wasn’t the same girl he had has always dated....

Follow @NigeriaPI Justices must go, says govt Buhari meets CJN Mahmud Detectives found a Rolls Royce in the fleet of about 15 cars of one of the seven judges under investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS), The Nation learnt yesterday. The judge was said to have hired a notable construction firm to build his palatial home and imported furniture from Brazil, Argentina and Spain. The judge, said a source close to the investigation, once conducted his “poor colleagues” around his mansion. Another judge told the DSS that he did not know how N18million was paid into his account and he did not get alert to enable him complain to his bankers. One of the judges also said the money found in his account was his accumulated medical allowances. Another judge was found to have submitted three assets declaration forms to the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB). The asset forms of the seven judges, who were arrested last weekend in a controversial sting operation, were being analysed by the DSS yesterday. The Federal Government has foreclosed the return of all the seven judges to the bench. The government believes the judges cannot be in the dock and be adjudicating at the same time. Those arrested are: Justices Sylvester Ngwuta and Inyang Okoro – the suspended Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Ilorin Division, Justice Mohammed Ladan Tsamiya, who was picked up in Sokoto; Justice Adeniyi Ademola (Federal High Court); the Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice I. Follow @NigeriaPI Justice Ibrahim Auta, the Chief Justice of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, may well be neck deep in the corruption that led to last weekend’s arrest of some high court judges by the Department of State Security (DSS), SaharaReporters has learnt. Investigators said Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court in Abuja, in whose home over $550,000 was allegedly found during the raid, has confessed to a deal between him and Chief Judge Auta by which $300,000 of the physical cash found in his bedroom was to have been shared between the two men. He said only $50,000 belonged to him in the deal, indicating that the CJ was awaiting his share when the DSS operatives swooped in on his residence and arrested him on Saturday night. It is unclear to whom the balance of $200,000 would have gone. Asked if that had been the pattern of bribery for the CJ, he answered in the affirmative, saying that several High Court judges are assigned lucrative cases by the CJ, who then requests them to collect the bribes in dollars and transfer to him physically at home. He revealed that the CJ has received monies from him several times after matching him with high profile cases that are then settled in favor of the highest bidders. SaharaReporters learnt that CJ Auta was quizzed and then quietly released yesterday by the DSS, but the department has not officially confirmed either his arrest or interrogation. Powerful interests are pushing back against the arrest of corrupt judges. SaharaReporters has however learnt that four, including Appellate Court judge Uwani Abba-Aji,...
