Follow @NigeriaPI The Inspector–General of Police Intelligence Response Team and Anti Kidnapping Squad of Police in Abuja have arrested 11 kidnap suspects, allegedly led by a dismissed personnel of Department of State Services, Abdulrasheed Maigari. ACP Abba Kyari, leader of the squad, revealed in Lagos on Wednesday that the suspects had made millions of naira from victims abducted mostly by traffic lights in Abuja. Kyari said the DSS’ former personnel, Maigari, 35, was a 2006 Political Science graduate of Bayero University, Kano. He said police investigation revealed that Maigari was recruited as a graduate officer in DSS in September 2011, later dismissed and charged to court in 2015 for a N310 million heist in Abuja. According to Kyari, the suspect, who is an indigene of Donga in Taraba State, joined the kidnapping gang after he was charged to court and granted bail on Nov. 28, 2016, following his arrest with some unidentified soldiers for bank robbery in Abuja. “He immediately joined this kidnapping gang in Abuja and became its coordinator. He rented two houses in Suleja, where the gang was keeping its victims”, he said. He said some victims kidnapped by the gang included 67-year old Alhaji Isa Ozi Salami, former General Manager of Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN), the Managing Director of Nigeria Paper Mills in Jebba, Chairman, Gateway Insurance, Ms Ngozi Dabiri, and one Mr Japhet and his wife, who paid N5 million ransom after they were kidnapped in Gwarinpa, Abuja. Follow @NigeriaPI A 35-year-old trader, Helen Ogochukwu, on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly beating her neighbour, Mr Dotun Shomoye, to a pulp. Ogochukwu, who resides at No. 5, Adekoya St., Oshodi, Lagos, pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge of assault, willful damage and breach of peace. The Prosecutor, Insp. Eruada Victor, told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 4 at her residence. Victor said the accused assaulted her co-tenant, Mr Dotun Shomoye, by beating him to a pulp. He said the assault followed an argument between the accused and the complainant, Shomoye. He said the accused tore the complainant’s T-shirt valued at N2,000, while the case was reported to the police and the accused was arrested. The offences contravened Sections 166, 171 and 337 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Sections 171 and 337 prescribe three-year jail term for assault, and damage. The Magistrate, Mrs G.O. Anifowoshe, granted the accused bail in the sum of N2,000 with one surety in like sum, one of who must be gainfully employed and show evidence of a two-year tax payment to the Lagos State Government. Follow @NigeriaPI A Mararaba Upper Area Court, Nasarawa State, on Wednesday ordered the remand of two men in prison for allegedly beating up a security guard into stupor. The judge, Ibrahim Shekarau, ordered that Badamasi Sani, 25 and Salisu Nura, 23, be remanded in Keffi prison pending further order of the court. The accused are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, criminal force and causing grievous hurt. Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sergeant Steve Kwaza, told the court that the defendants conspired and mercilessly beat up one Namakka Danjuma, a security guard at Alfarma Quarters, Mararaba on March 24. “Apart from beating the security into an unconscious state, the defendants used a stick on the victim and as a result, he had a fracture on his right shoulder. “The injury was so bad that Mararaba Medical Centre and Keffi Federal Medical Centre rejected him and referred him to Orthopedic Hospital, Dala in Kano State. “As I speak now, the victim is diagnosed of internal bleeding and is still on admission with no hope of when he will be discharged or recover,” Kwaza told the court. The prosecutor also pleaded with the court to put on hold sentence of the accused pending when the victim would be out of hospital to determine possible compensation. Follow @NigeriaPI Two people, who allegedly falsified the expiry date of tyres have been arrested by the police in Lagos state. The suspects are currently being detained at the Criminal Investigations Department of the State Police Command, Panti Yaba. The two suspects, Samuel Obi and Izuchukwu Iwueze also reportedly changed engine and chassis numbers of vehicles. According to the police, the suspects were traders at the popular Ladipo Auto Spare Parts Market in the Mushin area of Lagos State. The deputy commissioner of police in charge of the state CID, Bolaji Salami said that 19-year-old Samuel was taking his expired tyres to Iwueze, who has the machine to falsify the expiry date. The police boss said “The machine they have could change the date on vehicle’s tyres, engine and chassis numbers. We got information about them through members of the public.” He added, “We recovered some tyres they changed their expired dates as exhibits.” Iwueze confessed to the crime and claimed to have been introduced to the business in 2016 by one of his friends. The suspect also said that apart from traders, motorists from outside also come to him to falsify the expiry date of their vehicle’s tyre. Iwueze said, “Some customers come to us and ask us to change the expiry date on their tyres because Road Safety officials were troubling them as a result of the date. Follow @NigeriaPI The Federal Government on Wednesday arraigned the Commandant of the Peace Corps of Nigeria, Dr Dickson Akoh and the Incorporated Trustees of the Corps, a 90-count criminal charges bordering on alleged conversion of money directly derived from extortion to the tune of about N1.4 billion. The Peace Corps of Nigeria boss pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him and the Incorporated Trustees of the Corps by the Federal Government and the prosecution counsel, Aminu Kayode Aliyu asked the court for a date to commence trial and that the defendants be remanded in prison custody. Counsel to the defendants, John Ochogwu had, in an application filed on March 23, 2017 prayed the court to grant the defendants bail in self recognisance or on liberal terms, pending the hearing and determination of the criminal charges against them. According to Ochogwu, the bail application, which was supported by an 18-paragraph affidavit was hinged on nine grounds, adding that the court needs to exercise it’s discretion in granting the defendants bail, since the first defendant (Akoh) has been on administrative bail granted him by the complainant (Police), He said the defendants are willing and ready to face their trial if granted bail and are also ready to comply with the bail conditions that maybe given by the court.
