Follow @NigeriaPI A mother of a 13-year-old girl that was raped and impregnated by her father has filed for a divorce before a Sharia court Magajin Gari, Kaduna, Kaduna State. In a writ of summon submitted before the court, the mother, Maryam Manta alleged that her 40-year-old husband, Hafizu Isyaku raped his 13-year-old daughter, (names withheld) and got her pregnant when they were staying at Mararaba, a surburb of Abuja. She revealed that the shameful act forced her to abandon their home in Maraba, where she lives with her husband and relocated to Kaduna with their six children. She told the court further, “When I returned from where I went to see my parents, as a mother and as a woman, I noticed my daughter was not behaving normal and at the same time sick. “But I didn’t suspect anything because my husband do constantly gave her some concoctions to drink which he claimed was going to heal the daughter’s ailment. “But when the ailment persisted and I noticed my daughter had missed her period, I questioned and threatened her to tell me if she had any affair with a man and she eventually opened up to me that her father had been making love to her. “So, when I confronted Hafizu with the issue, he cried and confessed about joining a cult group which mounted pressure on him to get his daughter pregnant and also abort it as part of the sacrifice. “I became confused and cried my life out and he promised to disssociate himself from the cult and I went together with him to the hospital where...

Follow @NigeriaPI In a record chasing history that is close to Guinness book of record, a 41 year-old man arrested by the operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police for stealing the phone of his helper has pleaded that he should be assisted from going to prison the eighth time. The suspect, Emmanuel Oyewunmi, from Ikale, Ondo State, was arrested by the operatives on Friday night at Ojodu-Berger Bus Stop for stealing N600 and a phone from a bus driver and a passenger. Oyewunmi, before now, has been on the wanted list of RRS’s operatives for stealing a Samsung Galaxy S4 belonging to one Mrs. Adesewa Oni from her car. On the said day, Oyewunmi was a park attendant outside Shoprite Shopping Mall, Ikeja, when Oni drove in to attend a ceremony at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium in Alausa. For keeping an eye on her car, Oni instead of offering Oyewunmi the N200 he requested decided to drive him to a nearby ATM to withdraw some money out of which she gave him N1000. Unwittingly for her, she left Oyewunmi inside her car while she gets the money from the ATM. Upon returning, she handed Oyewunmi the N1,000 and she drove off. The victim, while reliving her experience said “I have driven about five minutes away from Alausa when I felt the urge to make some calls for appointments, and I realised that my phone, Samsung Galaxy S4, was missing. Quickly, my mind raced to him and I realised my folly. “How could I have left a total stranger in my car alone, leaving...

Follow @NigeriaPI One of the four pupils of the Lagos Junior Model College, Igbonla, Epe, Lagos State, who were abducted by gunmen last Thursday, has fallen sick. A source close to the family of the affected schoolboy told PUNCH Metro on Sunday that the kidnappers, however, assured the parents that they had administered treatment to him. Our correspondent gathered that negotiations on the ransom were in progress as the victims’ families were running around to raise the sums demanded by the gang. PUNCH Metro had reported that the attackers, comprising five men and a woman, at about 8am on Thursday, stormed the school and abducted four pupils, a teacher and a vice-principal. The victims, who were reportedly rounding off prayers at the assembly hall, were taken away by the abductors, who shot sporadically into the air. The pupils, identified as Isaac Adebisi, Okonkwo Emmanuel, Abu and Jeremiah; the English Language/Civic Education teacher, Lukman Oyerinde, and the Vice-Principal, A.O. Oyesola, were taken away in a speedboat. It was reported that the kidnappers, who called a parent of one of the schoolboys, demanded N30m for the victims, requesting N5m for each of the six. PUNCH Metro learnt on Sunday that one of the schoolboys had fallen ill. The family members reportedly pleaded that the gang should collect the amount raised so far and let go of him. The source said, “The men called on Saturday and Sunday and told us that one of the boys was sick. They said his temperature was high. They called one of the relations of the pupil and wanted to know the drug they could use...

Follow @NigeriaPI Eight more senior judges are under investigation and will soon be arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) as part of its latest attempt to cleanse the judiciary of corruption, Daily Trust gathered yesterday. Seven judges were earlier arrested in different states across the country between Friday night and Saturday morning over alleged corrupt practices. A top official of the service told Daily Trust that the seven senior judges arrested were still in custody and would be arraigned in court any moment. The judges in custody last night are: Inyang Okoro and Sylvester Ngwuta of the Supreme Court, Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court, Abuja, Kabir Auta of the Kano High Court, Mu’azu Pindiga of the Gombe High Court, Mohammed Tsamiya of the Court of Appeal, Ilorin and the Chief Judge of Enugu State Justice I. A. Umezulike. The DSS said Saturday that it recovered over N93 million and $530,000 cash from three arrested judges. The source said the judges were allowed access to their families and were cooperating with the agency. “We still respect them. They are not being treated like common criminals,” he said. As part of the investigations, three registry staff from various courts were also invited for questioning, the source said. He added that the corruption cases against the judges were disturbing and investigations were carried out with “facts and figures.” He said the current clampdown on the judicial officers was based on intelligence, and not on the perception of ordinary Nigerians. “We received petitions against these judges on cases they are handling. The worst part of it is where they...

Follow @NigeriaPI Barely 48 hours after the Department of State Services, DSS, had taken seven suspected corrupt judges into its custody, details of what led to their arrests and how they were picked up from their homes by operatives of the agency began to emerge last night. Competent sources close to the operations told Vanguard that the agency could no longer watch and allow corrupt judges use their positions to engage in sabotage, subversion and espionage latching on huge proceeds of corruption. A source said that unknown to most Nigerians, some of the judges had been collecting huge bribes to subvert the will of the people, using the proceeds to acquire choice property and build fat bank accounts without putting in enough efforts to do the job they were paid to do. The source said that based on series of petitions from concerned Nigerians to checkmate the excesses of the corrupt judges, the DSS moved in and began a covert investigation, which finally led to the establishment of prima facie evidence against them. As we speak now, we have incontrovertible evidence of brazen corruption against the seven judges in our custody and we are ready to charge them to court, even tomorrow. ‘’By our own analysis, the rot in the political scene – election rigging, inter and intra-party crises and election petition trial from tribunal to Supreme Court – gave rise to the deep corruption in the judiciary. In the economic sphere, Nigeria lost cases to foreign investors due to the collusion of judges with foreigners, leading to the loss of hundreds of billions of Naira by the country,...

Follow @NigeriaPI A pall of darkness descended on the nation’s judiciary on Friday night and the early hours of Saturday, as gun-wielding security agents swooped on the residences of senior judges, breaking doors and threatening to harm their family members and aides. The raids were carried out by agents of the Department of State Services in Abuja, Port Harcourt and Gombe. The judges affected are of the Supreme Court and Federal High Court. At least two of the judges had recently ruled against the DSS and condemned its disregard of the laws of the land during its operations. The actions of these agents of state, observers say, are reminiscent of the executive lawlessness and human rights abuses that characterised the nation’s military era, including the period that President Muhammadu Buhari spent in power as a military dictator. Expectedly, the actions of the agents attracted widespread condemnation from Nigerians with the Nigerian Bar Association, declaring a state of emergency in the judiciary and asking for the immediate release of the judges. The DSS, at the end of the operations, which lasted at least 12 hours, arrested Justices Sylvester Ngwuta and John Okoro, both of the Supreme Court bench, as well as Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court in Abuja. The security operatives also searched the house of another judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, but he was not arrested. Justices Ademola and Dimgba’s duplexes are separated by a fence at the Apo Legislative Quarters, Abuja. Justice Dimgba occupies 30A, while Justice Ademola lives at 30B. Both houses are on S.O Ogbemudia Crescent, Zone E, Apo...

Follow @NigeriaPI The House of Representatives on Thursday resolved to investigate the N65 being charged customers by commercial banks for Automated Transaction Machine. The house directed its Committee on Banking and Currency to investigate the charge and other related rates paid by banks’ customers. The resolution followed a motion under Matters of Urgent Public Importance moved by Tijani Yusuf (PDP-Kogi), which was unanimously adopted by members through a voice vote. Bank customers can withdraw from ATMs other than those of their banks freely thrice a month. Subsequent withdrawals would attract a N65 charge. Moving the motion, Yusuf expressed concern that banks across the country had been extorting N65 from customers from every bank transaction while the Central Bank of Nigeria failed to act. He said that recently, banks in the UK were asked to pay customers monies collected from them in the name of bank charges. Also contributing on the matter, Rep. Aminu Suleiman (APC-Kano) accused the CBN of not doing its job as a regulatory agency. The house referred the matter to the Banking and Currency committee and was directed to report back in four weeks for further legislative action. source:...

Follow @NigeriaPI A former Chief of Air Staff, Adesola Amosu, who was accused of stealing from the Nigerian Air Force bank account to buy personal properties worth billions of naira, is still in plea bargain talks with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, his lawyer told a federal judge Tuesday. Norrison Quakers, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, told Justice Mohammed Idris of the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court that the plea bargain talks between his client and the EFCC were still ongoing. Mr. Amosu, a retired Air Marshal, was arraigned in June alongside Jacob Adigun, an Air Vice Marshal, and Gbadebo Olugbenga, an Air Commodore, on a 26-count charge of stealing N50 billion. Also arraigned with the trio were their companies – Delfina Oil and Gas Ltd; McAllan Oil and Gas Ltd; Hebron Housing and Properties Company Ltd; Trapezites BDC; Fonds and Pricey Ltd; Deegee Oil and Gas Ltd; Timsegg Investment Ltd; and Solomon Health Care Ltd. On July 8, the defence team, made up of Mr. Quakers, Bolaji Ayorinde (SAN), Kemi Balogun (SAN) and A. Etuokwu informed the court of their clients’ intention to enter plea bargain. The members of the team, who had earlier told the judge that their clients had returned “colossal sums” to the federal government, sought an adjournment to perfect their N500 million each bail condition and to “smoothen” their talks with the EFCC. According to the charge sheet, Mr. Amosu and Mr. Adigun, a former Head of Accounts and Budgeting at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), allegedly removed sums running into billions of naira from NAF’s bank account to purchase properties...

Follow @NigeriaPI National Diploma holder of a polytechnic in Delta State, Anene Odikose, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for impersonation. A police uniform, an identity card bearing his name and a Honda car were said to have been recovered from him by operatives attached to the Anti-Robbery Squad of the Agbado division. PUNCH Metro learnt that the team apprehended 31-year-old Odikose on Monday during a stop-and-search at a checkpoint on Matogun Road, Oke-Aro, in the Ifo Local Government Area of the state, where he lives. The suspect, who hails from Aniocha North, Delta State, had reportedly hid under the Force to defraud and harass unsuspecting members of the public before luck ran out on him. In a chat with our correspondent, Odikose said he was dismissed in 2011 while undergoing training at the police college in Rivers State. He said the shame of returning home made him to approach a police friend, who assisted him in obtaining the uniform and the ID card after he paid N500. He said, “I am an ND holder in Business Administration. I was enlisted in the police in October 2011. During the 15-month training at the police college in Rivers State, some officers came from Abuja to screen us. Unfortunately, I was dismissed on the grounds of physical fitness. “When I left the college, I was shy to go back to the village and tell my people that I had been disqualified.
