According to the Tribune Newspaper, AN Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in charge of Training and Development at the Edo State Police Command has reportedly committed suicide in Benin City.
The police chief, whose name was given as ACP Christopher Nosakhare Osakue, was said to have shot himself in the head with his service pistol in his private residence in Upper Sokponba area of Benin City on Wednesday.
The Edo State-born police chief was reported to have sent a woman and a boy living with him on an errand so that he could carry out the act without anybody noticing him.
It was gathered that ACP Osakue suffered a partial stroke a few years ago and was gradually recovering when he took his own life.
He was said to have left no suicide note for his wife and children.
The deceased’s residence was deserted on Saturday while an ash-colour Lexus SUV with number plate ONDO NND-131HV was seen in the compound of the bungalow.
A neighbour said she heard a gunshot inside the ACP’s residence at about 5.00 p.m. on Wednesday.
It was further learnt that the police officer hosted some youths in his area who visited him last Christmas to a reception.
The ACP family members could not be reached for comment.
Meanwhile, investigation at the Edo State Police Command headquarters in Benin City revealed that the ACP was posted from Ondo State police command recently.
Contacted, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Mr Haliru Gwandu, said that it was a case of suicide.
Mr Gwandu said the pistol he used to commit the act was signed for in Ondo State police command where he was recently posted to Edo Police command.
