Witness Tells Court How Bishop Oyedepo’s Church Got N35m From Army General Involved In N19.7b Fraud

Follow @NigeriaPI Mr. Ahidjo Ikem, an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) witness, on Friday, informed a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos how the Bishop David Oyedepo-owned Living Faith Church received the sum of N35 million from Major-General Emmanuel Atewe, a former Commander of joint Task Force (JTF). Major-General Atewe is being prosecuted for alleged involvement in a N19.7 billion fraud. Mr. Ikem is Managing Director of five of the seven companies charged alongside Major-General Atewe, Mr. Patrick Akpobolokemi, former Director-General of Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA); Kime Egonzu and Josephine Otuaga for alleged fraud. The accused are facing an amended 22-count charge bordering money laundering. Mr. Ikem’s companies charged along with the accused persons are Jaggan Limited, Jaggan Trading Company Limited, Jaggan Global Services Limited, Al-Nald Limited and Paper Warehouse Limited. Other companies charged are Eastpoint Integrated Services Limited and De-Newlink Integrated Services Limited. At the resumed trial of the accused persons on Friday, Mr. Ikem Justice Ayokunle Faji that his five companies were used by Major-General Atewe to launder the said sum of N4. 9 billion from the JTF’s account. While being led-in evidence by the EFCC prosecutor, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, Mr. Ikem said he first met Major-General Atewe at the Aso Rock Villa Chapel, where they both worshipped, when the latter was Commander, Brigade of Guards. Sometimes between July and September 2014, the witness told the court, Major-General Atewe was appointed JTF Commander and invited him to Balyesa State. Follow @NigeriaPI The abduction of a two-month-old baby, Kudus Adebowale, by a customer has unsettled traders at a market in the Badagry Roundabout area of Lagos State. Kudu’s mother, Mrs. Alimat Adebowale, sells biscuits in the market, while the suspected abductor was identified simply as T-girl. PUNCH Metro learnt that T-girl was well known to most of the traders in the market and had lived in the community for over four years until a few months ago when she travelled. T-girl was said to have returned to the neighbourhood last week and went to the market, where she was treated to a warm reception around 9am on Thursday. It was gathered that she approached Alimat, who was breastfeeding the baby, Kudus, and took the child under the guise of playing with him. She reportedly strapped Kudus to her back afterwards and sat on a chair behind his mother, who was busy attending to customers. “Nobody knew when she (T-girl) disappeared from the market with the baby. The mother had looked back to check on Kudus, when she discovered that she had left the market with her child. We called her number, but she didn’t pick our calls. Justice Muslim Hassan issued the order mandating that three different funds – N23.4b, N9.08b, and $5m USD – are forfeited, as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said they were the proceeds of illegal activity. Follow @NigeriaPI A disagreement over N50 has led to the death of a motorcyclist, Michael Eze, in the Igboeze North Local Government Area of Enugu State. Forty-year-old Eze was allegedly killed by his passenger, Michael Gabriel, around 9pm on February 2, 2017, for demanding that N50 be added to their agreed fare due to the length of the journey. Gabriel, in a fit of anger, allegedly hit the victim with an iron rod in the head, which made him to collapse. He was rushed to a private hospital in the community where he was confirmed dead. Policemen from the state command arrested the suspect. A resident, who did not want to be identified, said Gabriel was close to his house when the incident happened. He said, “When the rider saw that the house was farther than what Garbiel described to him, he insisted that N50 must be added to the fare they agreed on. Follow @NigeriaPI The Police Command in Enugu State has arrested two members of vigilance group in Nimbo, Uzouwani Local Government of Enugu State, for alleged kidnap of Enechi Ejiofor on Dec. 13, 2016. The command’s spokesperson, SP. Ebere Amaraizu, made this known to newsmen in Enugu on Thursday. Amaraizu said the suspects abducted Ejiofor, a Special Assistant on Security Matters to Uzo Uwani Local Government Area Chairman, in December on his way to an official assignment at Ugwuiyi Ekoro was still missing. He said that the kidnappers demanded N10 million ransom on Dec.14, 2016 from the family but later reduced it to two million which one of the suspects collected. The police spokesperson said that the two suspects were helping the operatives in their investigations. He said that the first suspects revealed that they allegedly collaborated with the community vigilance group to kidnap the victim. Amaraizu said that the first suspect, who claimed to be a Nollywood actor, said that he played a big role in monitoring the victim’s movement because he knows him very well,’’ he said. Follow @NigeriaPI A Plateau High Court sitting in Barkin-Ladi on Thursday sentenced a 37-year-old man, Benjamin Toma, to death by hanging for killing his wife, Vicky. Justice Samson Gang, in a 68-page do judgement, pronounced Toma guilty of a one-count charge of culpable homicide, punishable with death, under section 221 of the penal code. Going by the findings of this court, you, Benjamin Toma, mercilessly and in a calculative manner, took the life of your wife in cold blood. “You have not shown any remorse for your reprehensible act at the time of the incident and throughout the entire trial. “You were exhibiting such character traits that seem to suggest your deep conviction about the justness of your wicked and calous act. “In all of this, your two children are the ultimate losers, but the law shall nonetheless take its course; the offence for which you are being charged, does not contemplate a plea in mitigation. “The sentence of this court upon you is that you, Benjamin Toma, will be hanged until you are dead,” Gang declared. It was gathered that Toma was arraigned on Oct. 13, 2014, to answer a one-count charge of culpable homicide punishable with death, under section 221 of the penal code.
