Follow @NigeriaPI Disgraced US megastar Bill Cosby will stand trial June 5, 2017 for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman at his Philadelphia home more than a decade ago, a judge ruled Tuesday. The pioneering black comedian faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. He had returned to court on Tuesday in Pennsylvania as part of multiple attempts to avoid standing trial for the alleged 2004 assault. But Judge Steven O’Neill set the June trial date regardless, and said proceedings could begin earlier if schedules permit. Up to 13 other women may testify at the trial if Montgomery County prosecutor Kevin Steele gets his way, although Cosby’s legal team will likely put up fierce resistance to any such attempt Dressed in a pinstripe jacket and gray pants, Cosby had appeared animated and engaged in conversation with his lawyers before Tuesday’s hearing at Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown, northwest of Philadelphia. Cosby allegedly plied Andrea Constand with pills and wine, then sat her down on a couch, where the actor allegedly assaulted her in 2004. Constand, who worked for the Temple University basketball team, now lives in Canada. Going to trial cements a brutal fall from grace for the once treasured father figure, apparent model citizen and award-winning comedian who smashed through racial barriers and delighted audiences with his gentle, self-deprecating humor. Cosby’s legal team said Tuesday their client was “not giving up the fight for his rights” and accused a lawyer representing other alleged sexual assault victims of waging a campaign built “on racial bias and prejudice.” “When the media repeats her accusations — with no evidence, no trial and no jury...

This amount of methamphetamine has an approximate street value of $45.6 million. In late June, a joint agency controlled operation commenced and the consignment was delivered to an address in Baldivis, Western Australia. As a result of the operation, a 42-year-old man and a 54-year-old man were arrested and charged with attempting to possess a commercial quantity of an unlawfully imported border controlled drug, namely methamphetamine, contrary to section 307.5 Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth), by virtue of section 11.1 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth). Follow @NigeriaPI Court Discharges Catholic Priest Charged With Rape Of 10-Year-Old Parishioner The Parish Priest of Church of Assumption, Asokoro, Abuja, Rev. Fr. Anthony Ochigbo, charged with the rape of a 10-year-old parishioner was on Tuesday discharged. According to a Gudu Upper Area Court Judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, who reportedly struck out the First Information report for lack of jurisdiction, said that the priest was arraigned under Section 282 of the Penal Code and not under the Child Rights Act. The judge stated that the court had jurisdiction to try the defendant under the Penal Code and not under the Act as submitted by the prosecutor, James Idachaba. He, however, added that the court had to also allow the rule of law to take its course as matters of jurisdiction was paramount in cases. “I, therefore, terminated the FIR and discharged the defendant,’’ he said. The prosecutor had applied to withdraw the FIR, contending that it was not properly filed. He said that only the High Courts had jurisdiction to try cases bordering on the Child Rights Act which protects the rights of a child. He stressed that the Act provides appropriated penalty for rape compared to the penalty provided by the Penal Code, adding that wanted the trial of the defendant to be filed and commence in an FCT High Court which had the jurisdiction to try cases under the Act. The defence counsel, Godwin Chukwukere, stated that the prosecutor was trying to hide under the shade of a minor, saying that there was no charge in a High Court on the case. It will be recalled...
