Police Nab Fake Assistant Comptroller Of Customs

Follow @NigeriaPI A 55-year-old man who claims to be an Assistant Comptroller of the Nigerian Customs Service has been arrested by the police. The man arrested in Ogun State, police say, has duped unsuspecting Nigerians. Mr Ariyo Wasiu, a resident of Lagos island was said to have been dismissed six years ago from the mechanic department of the customs for an act of indiscipline. According to the police, the dismissed officer was arrested while allegedly perfecting his act at a company in Agbara area of Ogun State in south-west Nigeria The spokesman for the police in Ogun State, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi, said investigation had begun to determine the culpability or otherwise of the fake Assistant Comptroller of Customs. He said charges would be filed after investigations. Police Restate Commitment To Tackling Cybercrime In Nigeria

The technical adviser to the Inspector General of Police, Mr Tolu Ogunshakin, made the remarks on Monday at a training for officers of the force in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. He said that cybercrime has assumed a worrisome level globally and emphasised the need for scientific investigation of such crimes. N1.4bn scam: Court admits 13 more exhibits against Badeh

Follow @NigeriaPI A Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday admitted 13 more exhibits tendered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in the ongoing trial of former Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh. Badeh is being prosecuted by the EFCC alongside his company, Iyalikam Nigeria Ltd., for an alleged N1.4bn fraud while in office. He denies the accusation. He is accused of stealing the dollar equivalent of the sum from the accounts of the Nigerian Air Force to buy property in choice areas of Abuja between January and December 2013. According to the commission, the offence, contravenes Section 15 (2) (d) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 as amended, and punishable under Section 15(3) of the same Act. The court had admitted in evidence two documents showing payments allegedly made to contractors working for the defendant, on Oct. 11. The earlier exhibits were part of the testimony of the sixth prosecution witness, Air Commodore Mohammed Sinni, who is the Director of Finance and Accounts at the NAF headquarters. During Thursday’s hearing, counsel to the EFCC, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), led the seventh prosecution witness, Oluwatoyin Oke, a business woman, in evidence. The witness allegedly sold a choice property in the Wuse 2 area of Abuja to the defendant. Oke reportedly told the court that she used to own and live in No. 19, Kumasi Crescent, Wuse 2, Abuja, until 2013 when she put it up for sale for N260m. Follow @NigeriaPI A self-proclaimed Zimbabwean Bishop, who with his brother raped and impregnated a 17-year-old congregant at their church has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. 41-year-old Bishop Andrew Mnkandla and his brother Lovemore, 34, a pastor at the church, held the victim hostage at his house and raped her on different occasions. They threatened that if she told anyone, “the demons they had exorcised from her would return with scores of others to haunt her. The court heard he went to the teen’s mother with his wife and tried to bribe her so that she convinces her daughter to change her statement in court. Mnkandla had pleaded not guilty to multiple counts of rape before magistrate Chrispen Mberewere. The court was shocked when Mnkandla failed to recite four common Bible verses. Mr Mberewere asked Mnkandla to recite Genesis 1 verse 1, Psalms 23 verse 1, John 3 verse 16 and John 14 verse 1. Follow @NigeriaPI A Federal High Court in Enugu on Thursday convicted and sentenced one Mrs Chika Charles to 90 years in prison for a N5.6m university admission scam. The jail term comprises three years on each of the 30-count charge preferred against her by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, a statement by the commission’s Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, s aid. The statement said that the sentences would run concurrently from the date of her conviction. The presiding judge, Justice D. Agishir, found Chika guilty of swindling three young Nigerians to the tune of N5.6m. During the trial, the court heard that the convict obtained the money under the guise of helping her victims to secure admission into the Enugu State University of Science and Technology. She was said to have perpetrated the crime through her unregistered non-governmental organisation known as Bold and Dynamic Gender Initiative. One Simon Chidubem and Friday Ali, both at large, were named as her accomplices, while Okudoh Obinna was mentioned as one of the victims.
