Two Armed Robbers Shot Dead, Two Others Arrested In Aba

Follow @NigeriaPI It was end of the road for two armed robbery suspects shot dead yesterday by a combined team of army and police personnel in Aba, Abia State. Daily Sun gathered that a gang of suspected armed robbers had, yesterday, morning snatched a Toyota SUV with registration number, EPE 568 EM from David Ogbole and drove towards the city centre. On getting to the Railway Crossing, between Eziukwu/Factory and Aba-Owerri road, the hoodlums were accosted by the policemen, who were later joined by some soldiers. The men of the under world opened fire on the police and in the ensuing gun duel that lasted for over 30 minutes, two of the hoodlums were reportedly killed on the spot, while two others were arrested. Others escaped. The incident, according to a witness, caused gridlock on the ever-busy Aba-Owerri Road, as motorists abandoned their vehicles and scampered for safety. It took over one hour for free flow of traffic to be restored. Sources at the Aba Area Command said two vehicles used by the hoodlums were recovered by the police, with the help of soldiers. Also recovered from the gang was a locally made pistol with a cartridge. It was gathered that one of the gang members was thereafter arrested where he was receiving treatment for the gunshot injury sustained on his right hand. Source: The...

Looters Burying Stolen Funds In Forests, Burial Grounds, FG Says

Follow @NigeriaPI The Federal Government says its anti corruption agencies have been inundated with information of how looters have resorted to burying stolen funds in their backyards, deep forests and burial grounds. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Lagos, said the whistle blower policy is working and has led to the recovery of more looted funds in many currencies. Mohammed assured in a statement signed by his Special Adviser, Mr Segun Adeyemi, that all the recovered looted funds were safe and government will give full account to Nigerians. The minister thanked Nigerians for their enthusiasm and commitment in helping the government to tackle corruption through disclosure of useful leads to appropriate government agencies. “Since we launched the whistle blower policy, we have received immeasurable support from Nigerians. “Yes, there is monetary reward for any information that leads to recovery of looted funds, but from what we have seen, most of the Nigerians who have come forward with useful leads were driven by patriotism rather than reward. ”Nigerians, fired by a fervid resolve to help banish corruption from their country, have daily inundated the offices of the appropriate government agencies with valuable information. “We have been told how looters have resorted to burying stolen funds in their backyards, in deep forests and even in burial grounds. ”Thanks to whistle-blowers, it is now clear that a rapacious few have pillaged the nation’s wealth through a vicious orgy of corrupt practices,” he said. The minister, however, noted that more funds were in the possession of looters than were available...

CBN Speaks On N13 Billion As Jonathan Remains Silent

Follow @NigeriaPI Despite claims by the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) that he approved and released the massive stash of cash recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from an apartment in Ikoyi, Lagos, former President Goodluck Jonathan has remained silent on the matter. The former president’s spokesperson has for days declined requests to state Mr. Jonathan’s side of the story. Operatives of the EFCC, acting on a tip-off on Wednesday, said they found $43,449,947, £27,800 and N23,218,000 hidden inside an apartment at Osborne Towers, Ikoyi. The funds are valued at N13 billion based on prevailing exchange rate set by the Central Bank of Nigeria. The EFCC circulated photograph and video footage of the operation, sparking nationwide outrage. But the anti-graft agency has so far failed to disclose ownership of the recovered funds. As Nigerians and civic groups demanded clarification about the recovered cash, sources in the presidency quoted the NIA Director General, Ayodele Oke, as telling President Muhammadu Buhari that Mr. Jonathan released the money to the agency for covert security projects. But Mr. Jonathan has remained silent despite requests by our reporter for him to speak on the matter. For two days, repeated telephone calls, text messages and email enquiries to the former president’s spokesperson, Ikechukwu Eze, were neither answered nor returned. The presidency is also yet to officially comment on the matter. CBN not sure it paid Ikoyi billions to NIA When contacted, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said it was not sure, as at Saturday, that the recovered billions, in mint fresh notes, moved directly from the bank to the NIA. The security...

Whistleblower Narrates What Transpired In The Lagos Apartment Where EFCC Seized $50m

Follow @NigeriaPI While Ayodele Oke, the Director-General of the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA) has claimed that the $43 million, N23.2 million and £27,800 (N13billion) cash found in an apartment in Lagos last week belongs to his agency, information available to SaharaReporters suggests that the woman seen hauling the money into the apartment in Ghana-Must-Go bags may have been Folashade Oke, his wife. Our investigation has revealed that the owners of Apartment 7B gave Folashade Oke, with phone number +2348059833410, as their contact. Sources at the NIA confirmed Folashade to be the spouse of their Director-General, Mr. Oke. The day after the money was discovered, Mr. Oke had told SaharaReporters he could not verify any information about the money as he had not read any report linking his agency to the cash. After pledging to speak to us thereafter, he did not take any calls until he suddenly announced that the money belonged to NIA, and that it had been approved by President Goodluck Jonathan for certain “covert” activities. One of the whistleblowers responsible for the discovery told our correspondent that since he started working on the property as a guard, a woman who spoke fluent Yoruba repeatedly brought huge bags of money to Apartment 7B. That particular property was known to guards as Apartment “Dash-Dash” because in the records there were two dashes where the name of the owner ought to be. He recalled that on two occasions, he helped the woman, who was always curiously dressed in a haggardly way, to carry the money to “Dash-Dash”. The woman, on the first occasion, gave him N10,000 as a gift,...
