Follow @NigeriaPI A vulcanizer, Wasiu Ibrahim, 35, was on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly raping his sister-in-law. The accused, who resides at 61, Abeokuta St., Ogba, Lagos is being tried for rape. The Prosecutor, Insp. Clifford Ogu, told the court that the offence was committed on January 26 at the residence of the accused. Ogu said that the victim, a 15-year-old girl was residing with her sister, the wife of the accused. “The accused raped the victim when his wife had travelled,” the prosecutor said. Ogu said the accused came home drunk and forcefully raped the victim. The offence contravened Section 259 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty. Follow @NigeriaPI A Jos magistrate’s court on Wednesday sentenced a labourer, Mohammed Tijjani, to two years imprisonment for stealing assorted shoes valued at N933,000. Tijjani, a resident of Jugwa Extension, New Karu in Nassarawa State, was arraigned on three counts of criminal conspiracy, store breaking and theft. The magistrate, Mrs. Helen Danboyi, handed down the sentence after the accused pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency. The prosecutor, Karimu Bashiru, had told the court that one Udeh Ubong of Rayfield, Jos reported the case to Anglo Jos police station, on February 8. Bashiru quoted Udong as saying that on the said date, the accused burgled his store through the roof, and stole assorted shoes, valued at a total of N933,000 The prosecutor said that during police investigation, the accused confessed to the crime. Follow @NigeriaPI The Edo Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has secured convictions of six illicit drug traffickers in the state from January to date. The State Commander of the agency, Mr Buba Wakawa, disclosed this in Benin on Wednesday. Wakawa said the convictions were secured at the Federal High Court sitting in the state. He also disclosed that within the same period 40 suspects comprising 32 males and eight females were arrested for various illicit drug offences. He said that 10 persons were counseled by the agency during the period under review. The commander revealed that a Dangote articulated vehicle driver who escaped arrest in November 2016 when apprehended with about 7, 950 kilogrammes of substances suspected to be cannabis sativa, had been re-arrested. He said that within the period 4, 749.2 kilogrammes of substances suspected to be cannabis sativa were seized, while 15 kilogrammes of suspected psychotropic drugs were also seized. Wakawa gave the breakdown of the figure as 1, 767.7 kilogrammes of suspected cannabis sativa seized in January, and 2, 981.5 kilogrammes were seized in February. Follow @NigeriaPI An Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday remanded a pastor, Joshua Ayobami charged for alleged murder of a widow with whom he had had an amorous relationship. The court did not take the plea of the 47-year-old Ayobami. The Magistrate, Mrs Risikat Olayemi, ordered that the suspect be remanded pending the legal advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution. Olayemi subsequently adjourned the case to March 9 for mention. Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp Elisha Olusegun, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on January 11, at 1.45 a.m. at Christ Evangelical Ministry Church, Fashina Area, Ile-Ife. Yetunde Awosanye, 35, was arraigned before an Ebutte Meta Magistrate Court for stealing the infant on February 2. The prosecutor, Kehinde Omisakin, said the accused committed the crime in Rentothen House Topa in Badagry, Lagos. Ms. Omisakin said the incident happened when the infant’s mother (whose name was not disclosed) was attending to customers in her shop, and the accused came to offer to help carry the baby. After the infant was handed over to her, the accused disappeared. While she was screaming and searching for her baby, a woman in a nearby shop said she saw Ms. Awosanye heading towards Mile 2 with the baby. Ms. Omisakin said the victim immediately informed her husband and he ran to Badagry police station to report the matter. She said the police followed the matter and caught the accused with the baby the next day, February 3. In her defence, the accused said she was a close friend of the victim and that she meant no harm, a claim the victim denied saying she only sees her in the neighbourhood.
