Six killed as suicide bombers attack Maiduguri

Follow @NigeriaPI At least six persons were confirmed killed as four teenage girls detonated explosives worn around their bodies at the outskirts of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, in the early hours of Wednesday, an official said. Four deafening explosions echoed over Maiduguri in quick successions at about 1.15 a.m., causing sleeping residents to jump out of their beds in fear of yet another horrific attack by Boko Haram. About 16 persons were also injured in the blasts. The security agencies are yet to provide details of what actually happened. But the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, said the explosions were caused by four teenage suicide bombers who attacked a location in Maiduguri, called Muna garage, which has been repeatedly attacked by suicide bomber in the past six months. The spokesperson of NEMA, Sani Datti, said in a statement that “four female teenage suicide bombers killed two other men (6 people dead) when they detonated explosives at Usmanti along muna Garage road at about 1.15 a.m.” He added that about “16 people who got injured were administered with first aid by rescue workers before being transported to the state specialist hospital and university teaching hospital in Maiduguri Borno state”. Suicide bombing by teenage girls primed by Boko Haram has been a major strategy of the insurgents for about two years now. Over 200 such teenage girls have lost their lives helping Boko Haram convey their lethal weapons to attack both military and civil populations around north-east Nigeria. Sadly, less than ten of them survived the deadly mission. It has also been observed that most the female suicide bombers were...

EFCC seizes N49m cash at Kaduna airport

Follow @NigeriaPI Who owns the N49 million “crispy notes of N200 and N50 denominations” abandoned at the Kaduna International Airport? This is the puzzle the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is trying to resolve. The EFCC found the cash on Monday night, packed in sacks. A man believed to be the owner ran away before EFCC operatives could question him. The cash was discovered by EFCC Zonal Office in Kaduna in five large black 150kg sacks during routine baggage screening at the airport. A top source in the commission said: “Upon careful scrutiny of the sacks, it was discovered that they contained fresh crispy naira notes of N200 denomination in 200 bundles totaling N40million and N50 denomination in 180 bundles totaling N9million. “The bundles were all sealed, purportedly emanating from the Nigerian Security and Minting Company (MSPMC) as seen in the label on the packs. “The five sacks were sighted unattended and without tags containing fresh bulk items suspected to be money from the aroma perceived from the sacks. “The owner of the money later showed up but could not state the exact money in the sacks or present any document authenticating the genesis of the monies. “However, his inability to give any concrete explanation made him become uncomfortable and he disappeared before the arrival of EFCC operatives.” Another source said the EFCC was working on clues that the fleeing suspect might be a courier for a syndicate. “We will get to the root of this crime. There is a way we can collaborate with some agencies to trace the source of the N49million. “We will also deploy...

50-year-old grandmother sells three-year-old girl to pay rent

Follow @NigeriaPI 50-year-old grandmother, Rita Eze, has confessed to being a member of a syndicate that allegedly involved in abducting children from Lagos and selling them in Anambra State. Eze was paraded along with one Ogochi Nwekei and Gladys Augustine at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters in Ikeja on Tuesday. The fourth suspect, Elizabeth, who was said to be ill, was not paraded. PUNCH Metro had reported that Augustine, who claimed to be Mary John, connived with one Samuel, who is at large, to abduct three-year-old Oluwasemilore Adebiyi, from her parents’ residence in the Alagbado area of Lagos. To hatch the plan, 28-year-old Augustine enrolled for beads-making apprenticeship at Oluwasemilore’s mother’s shop in January, giving her name as Mary John. She fled to Anambra with the girl seven days after. The girl was handed over to Eze, who confessed to selling her to Elizabeth through Nwekei, for N500,000. Oluwasemilore was, however, recovered by the police after Augustine was arrested in the Badagry area of Lagos on February 23. PUNCH Metro had further reported that some parents from different parts of the state had stormed the command and identified Augustine as the abductor of their children, saying the suspect adopted the same gimmick with which Oluwasemilore was abducted. The victims included four-year-old Farouk and his sister, Kafayat, 6, who were allegedly abducted in the Okokomaiko area in November 2016. The children had yet to be found. But Augustine denied abducting the kids, saying, Oluwasemilore was her first abduction. She said Samuel had lied to her that he and Oluwasemilore’s mother, Tobiloba Adebiyi, gave birth to the girl, but she...
