Syndicate threatens doctors with abduction, collects N220,000

The police in Lagos State have arrested a syndicate based in Enugu State, which allegedly called some medical doctors in the state and threatened them with abduction unless they parted with some money.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the three-member syndicate had defrauded four doctors of N220,000 before a petition was written to the police on the criminal activity.

Our correspondent gathered that two women, who were suspected members of the syndicate, identified as Rita Ojobo and Emmanuella Ossai, had been arrested, while a third member, Kelechi Ojobo, who allegedly made the call, was on the run.

The police said Kelechi was based in Togo and he was the one who withdrew the money each time a doctor who had been threatened with abduction or murder, paid the amount billed for him.

Our correspondent learnt that the two women were arrested in Enugu State by police operatives on Monday and brought to Lagos.

A police source said the mode of operation of the gang was to call the targeted doctor and threaten him with abduction or murder, unless he was ready to appease the gang with a certain amount of money.

Speaking with PUNCH Metro while being paraded at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters, Ikeja, 30-year-old Rita said Kelechi paid only N40,000 into her account from the sums collected from the victims.

The second suspect, Ossai,“The whole thing started since the middle of last month. Four people had paid N220,000 into my account. I cannot say whether he called some doctors to pay the money or not. He said he got the money from the spare parts he sold.”

The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said investigation was still ongoing
