Nigerian Charged For Defrauding South African Company $936,000

Follow @NigeriaPI A businessman, Chris Ifeorah, who allegedly defrauded a South African firm of $936,000, on Wednesday in Lagos got a reprieve as he was released on a N2 million bail. A Lagos State High Court sitting at Igbosere on the island which gave the ruling, also granted Ifeorah two sureties in like sum as part of the bail condition. Justice A. M. Nicol-Clay said the sureties should produce evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government. Ifeorah was on arraigned on January 18 alongside his company, Wigmore Trading Limited, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on a two-count charge of stealing and fraud to which he pleaded not guilty. The prosecution counsel, Muritala Usman, told the court that the accused committed the offences sometime in 2015 at Kellogg’s Company in South Africa. He alleged that the accused obtained some goods on credit from Kellogg’s and promised to pay back within three months. Usman said: “He became elusive after receiving the items until he was tracked down by the EFCC.” Usman had urged the court to remand the accused in custody pending the determination of the case. But counsel to the accused, B. Osakwe, urged the court to grant the accused bail on liberal terms. He said the accused’s mother was willing to stand as surety and would also produce the accused in court throughout the trial. Former NIMASA boss, Patrick Akpobolokemi, standing trial for N34bn fraud threatens to slap female journalist in a court premises

Follow @NigeriaPI The former Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency Patrick Ziadeke Akpobolokemi who is undergoing trial for massive corruption has assaulted and threatened to slap and kill a journalist covering his trial. In December 2015, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had arraigned him and five others before Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court Lagos on twenty two count charge of conspiracy fraudulent conversion and Money Laundering. Also arraigned were the Executive Director Captain Eziekiel Bala Agaba, Ekene Nwakuche, Governor Amechee Juan, Blockz and Stonz Limited and Al-Kenzo Logistics Limited. The accused persons were alleged to have fraudulently converted the sum of N2, 365,600,000 meant for the implementing of the International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Code which NIMASA was the designated implementation agency. The former DG was said to have gotten presidential approval for the release of the said monies through the office of the then National Security Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, Mr. Sambo Dasuki. For the purpose of executing the ISPS, a committee chaired by Captain Bala was set up by Akpobolokemi. Other members of the committee were Captain Warredi Enisuoh Mr Vincent Udoye, Governor Amechee Juan, Captain OBF Ola dipole and two NPA staff. The committee was mandated to coordinate the activities relating to the ISPS in line with international regulations and the scope in Nigeria. Investigation by the EFCC however revealed that, upon receiving the money, the committee instead of executing the project diverted the entire sum to their personal use, using companies owned by them and their associates to lauder the illegal proceeds. The film maker according to fresh reports tried to dupe the BDC operator of the sum of $60,000. Speaking on the arrest, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed that the film maker is currently under investigation after he was reported to have pretended to be a medical doctor. Ambode Endorses Death Penalty For Kidnappers.

Follow @NigeriaPI The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on Wednesday signed into law the anti-kidnapping bill recently passed by the state House of Assembly with a pledge to ensure its full implementation. The law imposes a penalty of life imprisonment on kidnapping for ransom, as well as death penalty for kidnappers if a victim dies in the course of kidnap, among others. At the signing ceremony at the Lagos House, Ikeja, Ambode said the spate of kidnapping in the state required decisive action from government. He said aside from the law, the government would put other measures in place to prevent kidnapping and other security breaches. The governor said, “Security is of utmost importance to our administration and we are confident that this law will serve as a deterrent to anybody who may desire to engage in this wicked act within the boundaries of Lagos. “While we use this law to address the challenge and punish the criminals, we are also putting in place appropriate measures, particularly in our schools and other vulnerable targets, to prevent security breaches.” Ambode assured residents that the justice system would be activated to execute the anti-kidnapping law to the letter. The governor also signed the Sports Trust Fund Bill and the Sports Commission Bill into law, explaining that the laws were enacted to address key issues, as well as harness the potential in the sports sector.
