Follow @NigeriaPI A self-proclaimed Zimbabwean Bishop, who with his brother raped and impregnated a 17-year-old congregant at their church has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. 41-year-old Bishop Andrew Mnkandla and his brother Lovemore, 34, a pastor at the church, held the victim hostage at his house and raped her on different occasions. They threatened that if she told anyone, “the demons they had exorcised from her would return with scores of others to haunt her. The court heard he went to the teen’s mother with his wife and tried to bribe her so that she convinces her daughter to change her statement in court. Mnkandla had pleaded not guilty to multiple counts of rape before magistrate Chrispen Mberewere. The court was shocked when Mnkandla failed to recite four common Bible verses. Mr Mberewere asked Mnkandla to recite Genesis 1 verse 1, Psalms 23 verse 1, John 3 verse 16 and John 14 verse 1. He drew laughter from the gallery when he said John 3 verse 16 reads: “Let your hearts not be troubled,” but it actually reads: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” ‘Oh well bishop, it looks like the Bible is giving you a hard time,” said Mr Mberewere. “You can’t even recite very common verses familiar to many people. Follow @NigeriaPI A Federal High Court in Enugu on Thursday convicted and sentenced one Mrs Chika Charles to 90 years in prison for a N5.6m university admission scam. The jail term comprises three years on each of the 30-count charge preferred against her by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, a statement by the commission’s Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, s aid. The statement said that the sentences would run concurrently from the date of her conviction. The presiding judge, Justice D. Agishir, found Chika guilty of swindling three young Nigerians to the tune of N5.6m. During the trial, the court heard that the convict obtained the money under the guise of helping her victims to secure admission into the Enugu State University of Science and Technology. She was said to have perpetrated the crime through her unregistered non-governmental organisation known as Bold and Dynamic Gender Initiative. One Simon Chidubem and Friday Ali, both at large, were named as her accomplices, while Okudoh Obinna was mentioned as one of the victims. Follow @NigeriaPI The Ogun State Police Command has arrested two suspected hired-assassins and a female banker over failed attempt to assassinate her ex-husband identified as Tochukwu Onyebuchi. The state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu paraded the suspects at the command’s headquarters in Abeokuta on Wednesday. He said the banker, Oluchi Tochukwu, hired the suspected criminals to assassinate her husband in his residence at Ayobo area of Lagos State. Iliyasu named the two suspected assassins as Chigozie Smart (32) and Kingsley Ikechukwu (36). He said they were intercepted and arrested on Oct. 19 at Ijebu-Ode while attempting to escape to Onitsha with the victim’s Range Rover Jeep. He said Oluchi was arrested at Ayobo area of Lagos State. Follow @NigeriaPI Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumugobia was granted bail on Saturday evening after detectives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) searched her home in Lagos, SaharaReporters has learned. When the agents were done with their search, the Federal High Court judge, who was caught in a fake attempt to check herself into Golden Cross Hospital in Ikoyi in order to avoid her summons, was weeping like a baby. The EFCC found several documents showing the judge had bought homes abroad and also recently, on Park Avenue in Ikoyi. The most damning document shows that the judge, who once freed former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode on a technicality over corruption charges, had wired at least $900,000 to foreign banks between 2014-2016. She could not explain the source of the funds to investigators, who asked her to return to their offices on Monday. Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia turned herself in to the EFCC on Thursday after she was traced to a hospital in Lagos where she had claimed she was admitted. Follow @NigeriaPI The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Mohammed. A top source in the anti-graft agency told our correspondent on Monday that the former FCT minister was arrested around 10.39am on Monday and taken into custody for interrogation by a team of operatives, who were awaiting his arrival. The source said Mohammed was still writing his statement as of the time of filing this story. It was gathered that the commission commenced discreet investigations into the activities of the former minister following a petition against him in 2013 while he was still in office. “We have been on the probe for some times. As we are talking now, the former minister is writing his statement,” the source said. It was learnt that the EFCC was investigating the ex-minister for alleged fictitious contracts worth N1bn and the allocation of 12 properties and 37 commercial plots of land to a suspected front of Mohammed and a controversial Abuja land swap deal put at N1tn. It was learnt that prior to the arrest of the ex-minister, the EFCC had interrogated top directors of the FCT. Those quizzed, the source added, included the Director of Treasury, Ibrahim Bomoi, his counterpart  in charge of Land, Babayo Mainasara, and the Director in charge of Abuja Geographical Information Service, Ms Jamila Tangaza.
